Old Cairo (also known as "Fest City" or "Ancient Cairo") is one of the historical centers of Cairo and has a rich historical heritage. Its history can be traced back to the 7th century BC. It was an important city in the Pharaoh era, the Greco-Roman period and the Islamic period. There are many historical sites in Ancient Cairo, witnessing the long civilization of Egypt.
Overview of Ancient Cairo
Cairo, the capital of Egypt and the headquarters of the Arab League, is the political, economic and commercial center of the Middle East. The Nile River runs through the city. The ancient city of Cairo is located in the east of the current Cairo city. It is one of the oldest Islamic cities in the world. It was built in 641 AD and reached its peak in the 14th century. There are 622 historical sites and famous ancient buildings in the city, all of which are ancient palaces, temples and cultural and educational buildings related to Islamic culture. There are more than 800 mosques alone. It is known as the "City of a Thousand Minarets" and was listed as a World Cultural Heritage in 1979.
Cairo is one of the four birthplaces of human civilization. As early as the ancient Egyptian period, the pharaoh Menes of the former dynasty made Memphis near the present-day city of Cairo the capital. It was not until thousands of years later when Alexander the Great ruled Egypt that the administrative center was moved to Alexandria on the Mediterranean Sea. After the Muslims conquered Egypt, they built Fuster, the first capital of Islamic Egypt, in 641 AD. In 969 AD, the Fatimid dynasty established its capital in El Gillah, which became the core of medieval Cairo. In the 12th century, Saladin, the founder of the Ayyubid dynasty, transformed Cairo, built additional fortifications near Fuster and El Gillah, and established a base camp to replace the prince's palace. From 1267, under the rule of the Mamluk dynasty, Cairo became the new center of the Islamic world after Damascus and Baghdad.
